I kind of loved it. It’s not a very popular rendition, and it has a very unusual approach, but the music and set design, the cinematography, these were amazing. The adaptation was so shockingly stylistic in some sequences that I found myself entirely engrossed. I was trying not to watch the film too closely, but certain scenes, as they transition between different settings, different musical themes, are just too exciting to ignore. The acting did little for me, but I’ve also previously commented how I rarely find myself capable of assessing acting: it’s a porn sort of idea, I know good acting when I see it, and I didn’t know this was porn, I mean good acting, so I’m going to assume it wasn’t amazing. Still, it was a bunch of modern British stars pretending to be 19th century Russian aristocrats. I only recommend this film for the sake of its soundtrack, and its set and costume design.
