This film resonates philosophically with Doctorow’s Walkaway, but achieves an aesthetic altitude which his prose can never reach. It uses music, costume, makeup, choreography and natural imagery for its psychological palette, and only rarely to narrativize. So little tale in fact is told on screen, occasionally depicted, more frequently mentioned in passing, as a tether connecting character’s emotions and dreams. The soundtrack inspires movement and is the steady rhythm over which the plot’s melody flows. It is unapologetically romantic, and undeniably beautiful.
