She's Gotta Have It

I haven’t seen enough Spike Lee joints, but this is a step in the direction of correcting that. I loved the style, which to me evoked 90’s dating shows like Blind Date more than Christopher Guest-style mockumentaries. Which I would bet was the point. I liked how vibrant the characters were, with only one of them bordering on caricature and only in the most deliciously comedic way. The lead character is powerful and at times feels lost but the audience is never really led to question her: everything feels natural, even her ultimate rebuke of her own story’s climax and rejection of the “happily ever after” trope in favor of a happiness derived from self-fulfillment.
