Some obvious nods to Solaris in this one. I guess space makes a great setting for a psychological journey. It’s a literal, physical journey, a very solitary one, permitting the metaphorical exploration of the psyche. It’s a nice and sad little relationship study, an opportunity for an (always welcome in a serious role) Sandler acted astronaut to explore the things that keep him running away from his wife. Part of me thinks this might have been better as a longer film, or perhaps as a short story, but then I don’t know if the giant spider would have been necessary, and despite his occasionally tired “oh is that how humans do” lines, the giant spider proved a very welcome addition, with a very unceremonial departure from the film. Shots outside the ship were the best. Great nebulae renders and shit. I love me some space shots, fake or otherwise.
